Year 7 Homework
At Westfield Academy, homework is an important part of students’ learning journey. It helps them to remember key knowledge, build good study habits, and feel confident in their subjects.
We know that moving from primary to secondary school can feel like a big step. That’s why our homework system is designed to be clear, structured and manageable so pupils - and parents - know exactly what to expect each week.
To support effective learning, we ask that homework is completed in silence, without distractions such as phones, music, or TV. Parents play an important role by:
● Checking that homework is completed to an acceptable quality and quantity.
● Encouraging children to follow the suggested timings (though we recognise that some may work faster or slower).
● Supporting the habit of regular reading – we expect all pupils to read at least one book every half term.
We are also delighted to offer a Homework Club, which runs after school in the library and is open to all year groups. This club is supervised by our fantastic Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and provides pupils with a quiet, supportive environment to complete homework and receive help if needed.
What Homework Will Year 7 Have Each Week?
| Task | Time Requirement | Frequency | Setting and Deadlines |
|
Mastery of Knowledge - Revision using Mastery Sheets |
30 minutes | Daily | Each Friday, students will be asked to revise a new set of essential knowledge ready for the following Thursday |
| Sparx Maths | 60 minutes | Weekly | Set Friday, due Thursday |
| Reading | 60 minutes | Weekly | Set Friday, due Thursday |
| Subject-specific tasks | 30 minutes | Set by subject teachers, when appropriate | Teachers’ discretion |
1. Masters of Knowledge
Students will spend 30 minutes each day revising key facts and knowledge from their Year 7 Mastery Sheets booklet. A new booklet will be distributed to students at the beginning of each half-term by their Form Tutors.
This helps them to remember important information for all their subjects.
Teachers will check what students have remembered through:
○ Starter activities (called “Do Nows”) in lessons.
○ A special Mastery Recall Quiz at the end of each half-term.
2. Sparx Maths
Maths homework will be set every Friday and is due by the following Thursday.
If students are finding anything tricky, Sparx Maths has an Independent Learning section where they can revise topics they need more help with.
3. Reading
Students should spend at least 60 minutes each week reading independently and record what they have read in their planners. This will be monitored by Form Tutors.
We use Accelerated Reader, which helps students to choose books at the right level. Reading books can be selected from our school library; however, pupils are also welcome to bring in their own appropriate books from home if they prefer.
Students are expected to use Accelerated Reader to complete quizzes after finishing a book. The quiz helps to show that they have read the book from beginning to end and understood what they have read.
If students experience any difficulty accessing or using Accelerated Reader, they should speak to our school librarian, who will be happy to support them.
4. Other Homework
Sometimes, teachers might set extra homework for their subjects, like:
○ Creative projects.
○ Research tasks.
○ Flipped learning activities (preparing for future lessons).
If pupils are set extra homework:
○ It will be clearly explained using Google Classroom.
○ They will be given enough time to complete it.
At Westfield Academy, we want homework to help students feel confident, organised, and ready to succeed. It’s a key part of how we help them believe in themselves, strive to do their best, and achieve their goals. If students ever feel worried or unsure, they can speak with their teacher or Form Tutor – they’re always there to help.
