SCIENCE STATEMENT

Our vision is to develop well-rounded, confident and informed individuals who strive to achieve their full potential.

We will do this by providing a welcoming, engaging, and calm learning environment in which everyone is equal, and all achievements are celebrated.

Preparation is the key to success and this is a driving force in the organisation of our curriculum. Our intent in Science is to prepare students for their scientific journey at school and beyond their school journey. Students experience a curriculum which supports them to gain a deeper understanding of the world they live in.

The Science curriculum’s aim is that it will enhance their understanding of life and will also develop reasoning skills. The curriculum also aims to enable students to recall and apply key knowledge and apply a structured and logical approach to problem-solving effectively.

Throughout our students' journey through the science curriculum, we reward their efforts and really celebrate their achievements. We want to foster positive attitudes towards attainment and build well-rounded and confident students.

We are proud to expose our students to a wide range of experiences in our curriculum that goes beyond the national curriculum to enhance their cultural capital, from coding robots to flying drones. We have encouraged students to see science outside the classroom through talks from the National Space Programme, physics tournaments for our female scientists and our STEM-based science extracurricular club.

Our intent is the Science curriculum:

• Enables high standards of progress to be made in relation to academic achievement where, at Key Stage 5, outcomes empower students to progress to Higher or Further Education in accordance with their ambitions. 
• Provides a broad, diversified and knowledge-rich curriculum that is stimulating, comprehensive and accessible for all students. 
• Centres topics that promote British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
• Delivers opportunities for students to learn from their mistakes and misconceptions, as well as to gain useful transferable skills. 
• Expands students' perspectives through a range of curated topics such as ‘Inheritance’, ‘Using Resources’ or ‘Homeostasis’ that allow for spiritual, moral, social and cultural discursive opportunities, in turn promoting their sense of moral and social responsibility. 
• Ensures that all students are able to thrive and develop as healthy individuals and good citizens through initiatives such as masterclasses, science book club and STEM events. 
• Ensures that all students are safe and understand how to stay safe through choosing to teach topics such as ‘Healthy lifestyles’ and ‘Infection and response’. 
• Provides an appropriate range of learning in regard to opportunities and experiences that may inspire students to succeed in the next stage in their education, training or employment. 
• Reduces the gap between disadvantaged students and their peers.
